He was a participant in the Cần Vương (Aid the King) movement led by Nguyễn Duy Hiệu, which sought to resist French colonial rule. In the early 20th century, he was connected to Phan Bội Châu's Đông Du (Eastern Travel) movement and provided financial support to the Duy Tân Hội (Reformation Society). He was arrested by the colonial authorities during the 1908 anti-tax protests and died in prison after a hunger strike, refusing to submit.
